There are several different surgical procedures that are commonly used to help tuck the gland back in it’s appropriate location while preserving its normal function. Glaucoma is a condition of increased pressure within the eye which is quite painful and can lead to blindness.A primary form occurs due to anatomical problems with fluid drainage whereas secondary glaucoma is caused by some other eye problem which affects eye pressure. Unless the underlying cause can be reversed, treatment is usually lifelong. Surgery can mitigate some primary glaucoma cases. Primary glaucoma is reported in over forty breeds – the Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Chow Chow and Shar Pei are some of the predisposed breeds. Glaucoma tends to be far more painful in pets than humans as much higher pressures are common. The diagnosis is made by measuring the intraocular pressure with an instrument called a tonometer. Early signs may include a bloodshot eye, dilation of the pupil and squint- ing. Over time, the eye can actually swell and bulge as pres- sures increase. The pet may seem very distressed and dull due to the pain. Many medications are used to manage glaucoma, but they are not always successful. If the eye is blind already, painful and not responding to medication, sometimes removal is the better option for the pet. Cataracts are very common in dogs and are simply an opacity in the lens of the eye. Cataracts can be congenital (from birth), age related, secondary to trauma or other ocular disease or genetic in origin (the most common). Cataracts caused by Diabetes Mellitus are a common cause and are vir- tually unavoidable as it is the excessive sugar absorbed by the lenses that leads to the cataracts. If the entire lens is involved in a cataract, that eye will be blind. There are other causes for a cloudy lens besides cataracts – a normal aging change called nuclear sclerosis can mimic the appearance of a cataract and yet vision is adequate and the lens is not diseased. They can luxate and move around the eye causing damage or glaucoma. They can begin to dissolve, causing a nasty inflammation within the eye called uveitis, which is painful and potentially damaging itself. A small cataract that does not impact vision may not cause any problems at all. Continued on the following page. DIONNE M. BLAESING, PA 5318 Lemon Street, New Port Richey PAW LAW?
