After 40 years, many of those spent in disrepair, the Florida Keys SPCA has a brand new facility. Named the Harry and Judy McKonly Family Foundation Animal Center, it is hurri- cane-resistant, meaning the animals will not have to be evac- uated in the event of a major storm.Able to accommodate up to 72 dogs and 100 cats, the building was designed by Clearwater’s Bacon Group Architects. The shelter will be expanding many of its services, including their Faith Program which temporarily houses pets, free of charge, in emergency situations and cases of domestic violence. The non-profit raised more than $7 million during a three-year capital campaign.“We still need approximately $100,000 to purchase equipment, including a generator,” said Executive Director Tammy Fox.
