P t , S e s u o h e r a d W o When the initiative Just One Day began in 2012, about 10,000 adoptable cats and dogs were being euthanized across the United States - every single day.The premise of Just One Day,always held on June 11, was simple from the beginning: show animal shelters that by engaging their local communi- ties in creative ways, they would empty their shelters through adop- tions versus euthanasia. The initiative has proven that it is possible to find loving homes for 10,000 shelter animals in just one day versus euthanizing them. Other programs, such as ClearThe Shelters, established in 2014, have followed, further helping to reduce the number of animals euthanized in shelters - from 10,000 a day down to around 5,000 a day. Since 2015, The New Barker has co-sponsored a Florida initiative of Just One Day, partnering with Morgan Auto Group. Between 10 and 12 dealerships have hosted adoption events, invit- ing shelter and rescue group dogs, cats and volunteers to set up inside their showrooms. We averaged 35 adoptions each year. This year, we did something a little different by encouraging management from the dealerships to visit their local municipal animal shelters. “We welcome every opportunity to have community stewards such as Morgan Auto Group andThe New Barker, visit our facili- ty,” said Scott Trebatoski, Department Director at Hillsborough County Animal Services Pet Resources. Management teams from Brandon Honda and Toyota of Tampa Bay met with Trebatoski and staff on June 11.The Columbia Restaurant inYbor City donated a delicious lunch to staff and volun- teers for the day. The meeting resulted in Marazzi donating the research and development of a proprietary mobile app called Dogolog, to be rolled out to the public soon. Ford of Port Richey man- agement met with staff at Pasco County Animal Services. The meeting resulted in a commitment from the dealership to look into adding a donation option on their service department’s point of sale system. The dealership services between 500 and 600 a month. SunToyota staff drove a truckload of pet food and supplies to meet with Pinellas County Animal Services. All in all, it took a couple of hours out of everyone’s day, and opened a lot of eyes. Our municipal shelters need their community’s support, now more than ever. The New Barker+Morgan Auto Group = Just One Day. John Marazzi with adoptable Jordan. John Maffei with adoptable Patty. U
