www.TheNewBarker.com THE NEW BARKER 37 “The dogs really enjoyed what they were doing. This was fun and games for them. As soon as they knew where we were all going, they became very excited,” said Cynthia. As the group ventured into the dark, dense woods, they could feel the temperature dropping. Then, at one point during the hunt, Luca stopped to talk to the group for a few minutes.“All of a sudden the dogs caught a whiff of something and began fever- ishly digging,”said Cynthia.“In an instant,Luca spotted what they were doing and had to rush over to stop the dogs from devour- ing the treasure. It’s a delicate dance of telling the dogs to go find the truffles and then keeping them from eating them once they’re found.” The piéce de résistance, when the famished group returned from their hunt a few hours later, was a meal of Fritaja - scram- bled eggs with black truffles.“That dish really blew us away,”said Cynthia.“It was decadent and truly delicious.” The same growing condi- tions that make Oregon wines the answer to Burgundy are also ideal for truf- fles – equal to those found in France and Italy. The 5th Annual Joriad North American Truffle Dog Championship will be held January 24, 2019 in Eugene, Oregon. Truffle dog han- dlers and their dogs from around the continent will be participating. K9-Behavior.com Two new species of truffles were discovered on the roots of pecan trees in Florida orchards. “The good news is that you can eat them. The bad news is that you wouldn’t want to,” according to the Florida Museum. Researchers are studying the new species to learn more about their relationship to pecan truffles.
