A DESSERT COCKTAIL. Grace Restaurant was inspired by the desire to offer simple quality cui- sine in a beautiful seaside location like Pass-A- Grille. Framed prints of dogs underwater, pho- tographed by world-renowned photographer Seth Casteel grace the walls. Signature cocktails are named after the town’s local dogs, like the HaZi, in honor of Hazel (right) and Zimba (left). Photograph by Laurie Ross Photography. In 2012, Daytona Beach enacted a dining-with- dogs ordinance in accor- dance with the Dixie Cup Clary Local Control Act. The bill, signed into law in 2006 by then-Governor Jeb Bush, gives cities and counties a legal tem- plate for licensing and regulating restaurants that wish to serve dogs and their owners. But, when Daytona Beach revamped the city’s land develop- ment code, the ordinance “just disappeared” from the books, making restaurant dining with dogs illegal. This past April, the City Commission gave preliminary approval to a measure that resumes allowing the city’s restaurants to host outdoor dining with dogs again. Editor’s Note: The dog dining law in unincorpo- rated Manatee County expired in 2009. A new ordinance has been drafted and was awaiting final approval just prior to our going to press with this issue. DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEX-MEX. Chuy’s opened their first restaurant in 1982 in Austin, Texas. Founders Mike Young and John Zapp envisioned a fun and funky atmosphere, incorporating some design ideas from their “decorator” Jose Cuervo. The menu is fresh Tex-Mex, made from scratch, every day in their kitchens. Even the Chuy’s Margarita is made with hand- squeezed limes. While Chuy’s loves dogs, they do not offer dining with dogs, other than service dogs. However, they do have a world-famous Dog Wall in their La Chihuahua Bar. Every location across Florida features one, including Gainesville, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tallahassee and the new Tampa location. Bring in a framed photo of your dog and you’ll receive a free appetizer. Be sure to mention The New Barker sent you.
