20 THE NEW BARKER www.TheNewBarker.com BowWow Haus London was an international creative collaboration between the United Kingdom pet charity Blue Cross, the St. Petersburg, Florida not-for-profit Outdoor Arts Foundation and inter- nationally acclaimed photographer Drew Gardner. A network of archi- tects, artists and designers created 70 one-of-a-kind dog houses. Before the exhibition was packed up and shipped to London in January, we were able to view them at WestShore Plaza in Tampa. We met up with the artist Jules Burt, who gave us a personal tour of each dog house, including her own very detailed piece, Barkhouse Gallery. After the exhibition’s five-week display at St. Pancras International rail station in central London, through April, the houses were auc- tioned off, raising thousands of dol- lars. The proceeds are to be split between Blue Cross’s Hertfordshire Rehoming Centre and Outdoor Art Foundation. According to Jay Goulde,direc- tor of Outdoor Arts Foundation, the non-profit organization that partners with corporations and institutions to install public artworks in the Tampa Bay area, BowWow Haus London is the foundation’s first international event. “I didn’t expect it to go so global,” he said, noting that submis- sions came in from numerous British architects as well as nearly 20 American firms, and others in Singapore,Venezuela and beyond. “London is one of the most vibrant cities for art and culture in the world, so this was a really amaz- ing opportunity.” The project—the title of which is a play on Bauhaus, one of the most influential schools of art and design in the early twentieth century—had a slow start. It was 15 years ago when Goulde organized the first BowWow Haus, an exhibition of 40 dog houses produced in conjunction with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay in 2003. It attracted the atten- tion of the U.K.-based Daily Mail newspaper, which sent one of its photographers, Drew Gardner, to capture the installations. Gardner told Goulde that BowWow Haus would be a hit in Britain. It wasn’t until 2013 that Goulde began putting feelers out and everyone he spoke with was immediately on board. Sally Evans’ dog house, Sally’s Pally, featured one of the two Cavalier King Charles portraits that appeared on a cover of The New Barker in 2011. The dog house pictured in the center of this photo was designed by Jeff Pelszynski of Tampa’s Fleischman Garcia Architecture.
