64 THE NEW BARKER www.TheNewBarker.com the grrrrr-aphite dogs. Since our very first issue ofThe New Barker in 2006, every cover has featured a work of art by a different Florida artist. Our cover artist for this issue is also a musician who lives in Gainesville. Scott Ashcraft plays guitar in a band called Uncle Mosie, named after their fiddle player’s Great-Uncle Mosie Lister. A gospel singer and songwriter who wrote over 700 songs, one of his songs was recorded by Elvis Presley. He died at 93 in 2015. “My wife Dana is lead singer and songwriter, and we play with some amazing musicians on fiddle, keyboards, upright bass and drums,” said Scott. “Our fiddle and keys players sing too so we have some amazing harmonies. We play local Gainesville shows, benefits and music and art festivals.” Scott, who also teaches guitar, loves all kinds of music.“But, I’m partial to old-school country, Americana, folky-type music. Music with lots of emotive push, and harmonies you feel way down deep,” he told us. The Ashcraft family dogs: Lil bit, Dudley, Froda and Luna. Artwork by Scott Ashcraft.
